Playing by the Rules

There’s been a lot of talk over the past couple years about whether Facebook members can get viruses by playing FarmVille. The short answer, as I’ve explored before, is no. FarmVille is made by a popular video game company and they don’t have to resort to ridiculous hoaxes to make money. That doesn’t mean, though, that playing FarmVille doesn’t increase your chances of getting a computer virus.

You can lower your risk by making sure that you only accept applications and items that are legitimately a part of the game.

That means playing by the rules.

There are plenty of opportunities for FarmVille players to cheat by downloading applications and items that will give them an unfair advantage. Nine times out of ten, though, any FarmVille viruses will come from illicit sources that tempt you to download their applications by promising advantages in the game.

The first rule to avoiding viruses while playing FarmVille, therefore, is play by the rules.

If you choose to play outside the rules, then you’re probably going to pick up some type of malware. It might not happen today, but it will happen eventually. Risky gamers should choose reliable virus protection software that updates frequently to catch the latest malware attacks. There are lots of free program that you can download from CNET. Once you choose antivirus software, I would recommend running it at least once a day, especially if you play it fast and loose in the FarmVille.
