WARNING: Pedophile Group on Facebook
The following message has been going around Facebook lately:
“ATTENTION !!!!!!!!!!DO NOT join the group that runs currently on facebook with the title “becoming a father or mother was the greatest gift of my life” This is a group created by pedophiles whose aim is to access your photos!!!!!!! Please copy & paste this to your status and pass it round…… before someone’s photos… are used”
That’s a pretty scary proposition for those of us who have kids. There are, however, at least two ways that I can tell this statement is total BS.
1- I got a copy of this message pretty early on. It smelled a little fishy to me, so I went to check out this group. As it turned out, there wasn’t any group by that name.
If you search Facebook for groups with similar names, then you will certainly find them. But these groups have popped up AFTER the message went out. When you look a little deeper, you will find that none of these groups have been around for very long. It seems that some individuals thought that they could use the hoax message as a bit of free publicity. To what end? I don’t know. Some people just crave attention. I guess their parents didn’t love them enough or something.
2- Joining a group does not give that group access to your pictures. If the person who created this non-existent group actually was a pedophile, then he (or, less likely, she) wouldn’t get quite the thrill that he’d expected. Facebook has been very good about focusing on member service by limiting the access that organizations have to profiles. I run a couple of group pages, and basically all that I can do is send out messages and invitations to my members. I can’t read their profiles or look at their pictures.
Even though this is a Facebook hoax, you should still avoid any groups that try to capitalize on the popularity of the pedophile warning. They sprung up as a reaction to something ridiculously dumb, so there’s little chance that they are much better. Do yourself a favor: don’t waste your time on any group even closely related to this hoax.
