No More Animal Avatars?

Facebook regularly deletes animal profiles, presumably because the company has a rule that a member cannot create profiles for other people, or pets, or whatever. This has been a common complaint amongst Facebook users for at least two years now. Search the internet and you will find countless instances of people bemoaning the loss of their pet profiles.

It seems that this has led to a Facebook hoax, however, that completely misses the point.

This hoax involves wall posts claiming that Facebook will delete profiles of anyone who uses animal avatars for their photos.

I can see how the true event led to the fake one, but it involves either a monumental misunderstanding or an intentional hoax to get other Fb members all worked up over nothing.

Here’s the deal: Facebook doesn’t care what your avatar looks like as long as it doesn’t contain nudity, copyrighted images, or other pictures that violate the terms of your membership agreement. It doesn’t matter to them. Put up a picture of your gerbil if you want. As long as no one else owns the copyright and you’re doing anything pornographic with the poor thing.

Furthermore, Facebook doesn’t have the time to search for profiles that contain animal photos. Even if they cared, and I can’t imagine why they would, it would take an incredible amount of time to scour their memberships to locate profiles with animal avatars. Then they would have to check them all again the next day, and the day after that, and the day after that…

So feel free to use your darling pet as your avatar.
