New Farmville Hoax (Platinum Silver Pony and Pregnant Pig)

Farmville is a magnet for scam messages. There are so many that it’s often difficult to keep track. I could devote a whole blog to Fv hoaxes, but I don’t personally play the game, so that would get pretty boring on my end.

Some of the most common Farmville hoaxes warn players to avoid certain items in the game because they unleash viruses or worms. Most of these messages are total scams. With that said, you can never be too careful when playing a game like Farmville. Take everything with a grain of salt.

Here’s the latest scam warning that I’ve seen making the rounds on Facebook:

ATTENTION””ATTENTION”
VIRUS SCAM ALERT: DO NOT CLICK ON THE RARE PLATINUM SILVER PONY OR THE
PREGNANT PIG, IF YOU SEE IT ON THE WALL IT IS A TRICK. IT IS THE NEWEST
“WORMVIRUS/SCAM

According to most sources, there isn’t even a platinum pony available on Farmville. At least not yet. There are pregnant pigs, however. Neither, however, have anything to do with viruses or worms.

After reading several accounts, I have a pretty good idea of where this hoax originated: it started with another hoax. Let me explain. The platinum silver pony is not  yet available on Farmville, but there are some Facebook groups stating that you  can get the pony if you join them. This is utter nonsense. Farmville doesn’t forge alliances with certain groups on Facebook.

The current warnings advising people to avoid the pony and pregnant pig probably came from a misinterpretation of the initial scam. Someone thought that a group was using the pony and pig as lures for a virus. It’s also possible that a rival group started the warning to prevent people from joining other Farmville groups  on Fb.

Regardless of how the message originated, you don’t need to pay it any mind. But you should  avoid groups that  promise platinum ponies, pregnant pigs, and pretty much any other item.
