Are hacker profiles dangerous for Facebook members?

Malware is a serious problem that everyone who uses the Internet needs to learn about. Unfortunately, there is a lot of inaccurate information that can distract you from effective techniques that you could use to avoid various types of malware.

One of the most persistent inaccuracies on Facebook is that members should avoid certain profiles. These warnings, like the one below, state that a certain person is a hacker who can infect your computer through wall posts, comments, and Fb messages. This isn’t true. There are some risks associated with using Facebook, but you will rarely, if ever, find that a virus infects your computer directly from Fb.

Facebook is a large site with millions of users. Some of them are hackers. Just because they are hackers, though, doesn’t mean that they can magically infect your computer through Facebook.

Viruses, clickjacks, and other threats most often come from other websites. Hackers can, of course, post a link to infected sites, but you can use your own discretion when following links. There is no inherent danger associated with “friending” a hacker other than that you might be exposed to more links to infected sites. Still, hackers aren’t the only ones guilty of spreading these links. Well made viruses spread through the ignorance of average people. The truth is that your friends are just as likely to pass on viruses as hackers.

If you really want to protect yourself, then you should pay attention to links before clicking on them. Once you leave the Facebook site, there are no guarantees. Be particularly wary of those that promise naked celebrities. They are almost always scams of some sort.

Here’s a copy of a recent wall post spreading the lie that friending hackers will cause problems.

Ismail Permana Samudra = FACEBOOK HACKER !

IF YOU EVER SEE A POST FROM THIS GUY STAY CLEAR OF IT AND DON’T CLICK WHATEVER LINK HE MAY HAVE POSTED !!!

THIS ONE ACTIVELY PURSUES LURING PEOPLE INTO ENTERING THEIR FACEBOOK LOG/PASS IN A FAKE LOGIN PAGE.

Avoid like the plague! You might want to take the time to block all of his profiles !
HE HAS 21 ACCOUNTS that I know of, he might have others with a different name too…
