The Internets will get you

As far as Facebook hoaxes go, this one’s a real dozy.

Anyone-using Internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL and so on. This information arrived this morning, Direct from bothMicrosoft and Norton Please send it to everybody youknow who has Access to the Internet. You may …receivean apparently harmless e-mail titledï’Mail Server Report’If you open either file, a message will appear on your screen saying: ‘It istoo late now, your life is no longer beautiful….’
Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOURPC, And the person who sent it to you will gain accessto your Name, e-mail and password. This is a new viruswhich started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. AOLhas already confirmed the severity, and the anti virussoftware’s are not capable of destroying it.The virus has been created by a hacker who callshimself ‘life owner’
PLEASE SEND A COPY OF THIS E-MAIL TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS, And ask them to PASS IT ON IMMEDIATELY!
THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY SNOPES.ïïhttp://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/mailserver.asp

I guess this hoax is pointed at pretty much everyone in the developed world. Even my grandmother has access to the internet. Despite claims that Snopes has confirmed reports about the virus, there are countless blogs and researchers calling BS on this one. It’s pretty easy to see why. It’s designed to strike fear into the hearts of internet users who know very little about internet safety.

The sad thing is that the people who worry about this are probably going to get hit by another virus by following clickjacked links promising information that will help protect them from the big bad “life saver.” People, there are lots of legitimate viruses out there to worry about. This, however, isn’t one of them. Just use an antivirus program that works well (better yet, use two), pay attention to what you’re doing online, and keep your private information private. You’re going to be ok despite the fear mongering we’re all exposed to on a daily basis.
