Facebook to charge membership fees

For some reason, it seems impossible to kill rumors that Facebook will start charging its members monthly fees to use the site. This rumor has been going on for so long that it almost seems silly to post about it. When this morning I found a page on causes.com, though, I totally handfaced and had to share.

For starters, I was appalled that anyone would consider this a cause. Feeding homeless children is a cause. Preventing war is a cause. Free speech protection is a cause. Free Facebook access, however, is not a cause, people. If you’re all up-in-arms over the possibility of paying to use Facebook, then your perspective is very skewed. I’m willing to bet that you’re the same people who would trample another human being to save a few bucks at Wal-Mart on Black Friday. Priorities, please.

Scrolling through the comments on the causes.com page for We Will Not Pay to Use Facebook (I’m not even going to link to it here because I don’t want to contribute to their increased traffic. If you really want to check it out, then go look for it yourself), I wasn’t surprised to find some of the most idiotic statements, not to mention misspellings. For some reason, a lot of them think that Facebook should be kept free “for the troops.” Because a for profit company is totally responsible for giving troops free ways to communicate with people back home (and as if Fb couldn’t get some great publicity for providing those serving in the military with free access). Here are a few choice samples [comments in brackets are mine]:

DON T BE GREADY PLEASE ALOW SOMETHING THATS BEN FREE FOR A LONG TIME AND SO MANY PEOPLE CAN T AFFORD IT ALREADY,IM ONE OF THEM,PLEASE UNDERSTAND
AND THIN OF THE TROOPS AND FAMILYS THAT R FAR APART, HAVE A HEART, [I’m guessing that this person still uses rabbit ears for his/her TV. Oh, and the idea that for-profit organizations should provide services for free just to be nice is very naive. I guess oil companies should just give oil away because, you know, have a heart!]

It’s ridiculous for us to pay to talk to our friends and family. [Right, because you don’t have to pay your phone service provider to talk to people, or USPS to deliver your mail…]

We won’t pay simpley becuz we need to pay for other stuff like our familys or if this happens we jest aren,t going to use them!!!we have all sorts of other SP in the States!! [Yes, there are plenty of other sites that provide free services in the United States and everywhere else in the world (WWW, duh). So, why get all rowdy about the possibility that one company is going to start charging? I really hope that this person is an avid activist who hits the streets with great big placards over every unjust war, oil spill, and law that limits civil liberties.]
